Palestinian Territory

Projets de volontariat en Palestine

In French, the term « Palestine » is used for centuries to refer to the territory geographically located between the Mediterranean Sea and the Jordan River.

In the geopolitical sense and in the context of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, the use of the term “Palestine” may be a source of controversies. It’s the name of the self-proclaimed State in Alger by the Palestine Liberation Organization in 1988, and the term is used by the Palestinian National Authority to refer to the Palestinian State claimed by the Palestinians. The power of this Authority exerts a hold over a restrict part of Palestinian territories of the West Bank continuously since the Oslo I Accord in 1994, while the Gaza Strip is now administrated by the Hamas. This policy started with the free elections of 2006, as part of the Palestinian Authority and since 2007, after a deadly civil war between both. 94 States recognize a “Palestine State” and 11 countries do not officially recognize it as a State but grant a special status to a Palestinian representation.

The Arab population who lived in Palestine before the start of the Israeli-Arab conflict took in the modern history the name of “Palestinian population”, in reference to this designation.

The keffyieh is the traditional headdress of the Palestinian farmers and Bedouins. It allowed to distinguish the city-dwellers from the country dwellers. The keffyieh belongs to the whole Arab population from the Arabic peninsula, Iraq, Jordan, Syria, Lebanon and Palestine. From the region previously called : Al-Hijaz, Al-Iraq, Al-Yaman, Accham and Filistin. Then, it generalized to the point that become a costume element common to all the Bedouins and the farmers of Arabia and Mid-West.

This fabric piece was originally used to mask the face in order to protect oneself from the sun and the sandstorms. There are different patterns and colors that vary from yellow to black by way of red, white and green.

During the popular uprising against the British presence in Palestine, led by Izz al-Din al-Qassam, since 1936, the keffyieh has therefore an essential importance for the Arabs of Palestine. Indeed, the revolutionaries wore the keffyieh, that was used to protect the face and to not be recognized by the British. But of course, that made them more identifiable in the cities and the arrests multiplied, as those who wore it were considered like members of the resistance. And then all the population was called to wear the keffyieh. The city dwellers abandoned the fez (sign if social distinction) to wear the keffyieh that was, as seen above, a farmer’s headdress.

Today, it is the symbol and the emblem of the Palestinian resistance. Its wear by young people in the European countries allow them to show their political solidarity with the pro-Palestinian movements. But, becoming the subject of a fad, it is often adopted by people who wear it without even knowing what are its origins, meanings, values,…
